Short information about the project “Expertise Platform for the Sustainable  Semiconductor Ecosystem within the Baltic and Neighbouring Countries (SeBaltEc)”

The project “Expertise Platform for the Sustainable Semiconductor Ecosystem within the Baltic and Neighbouring Countries” (SeBaltEc) is funded by Swedish Institute (SI) within the “SI Baltic Sea Neighbourhood Programme”. The programme supports cross-border cooperation that contributes to sustainable development in the EU countries around the Baltic Sea and the EU’s eastern neighbourhood area.

Project participants:

  1. AGH University of Krakow, Poland
  2. National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, Ukraine
  3. Lund University, Sweden (coordinator)

Duration:
Sep 16, 2024 – March 16, 2026 (18 months)

The main aims of the SeBaltEc project are:

To address a shortage qualified people for Europe’s chip production industry by:

  1. Creating the Baltic Sea expertise platform for sustainable semiconductor ecosystem (aligned with the EU Chips Act)
  2. Establishing the networks of experts and infrastructure as well as communicаting the project results
  3. Development of knowledge in sustainable semiconductor research, production and innovation.
  4. Work to develop training courses in sustainable research and production
  5. Improvement of links to similar EU-initiatives, e.g. EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) or EU’s Eastern Partnership (EaP)
  6. Preparation of a new EU-proposal

SeBaltEc talks to Fraunhofer Institutes on sustainability

On August 7, 2025, members of the SeBaltEc project, Anatolii Orlov and Angela V. Piatova (National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”) and Ivan Maximov (Lund University) had an online meeting with researchers of Fraunhofer Institutes (Germany) about future cooperation and joint application for funding. The Fraunhofer institutes were represented by Manuel Thesen (FMD), Tugana Aslan (FMD), Nils F. Nissen (Fraunhofer IZM) and Marco Kircher (Fraunhofer IPMS). Discussions focused on “Green ICT @ FMD” (Forchungsfabrik Mikroelektronik Deutschland) activity in sustainability in microelectronics and the SeBaltEc expert network formation. Common interests were found in education in sustainability in microelectronics and in future projects to reduce environmental footprint in nano- and micro-electronic processing.
